Coloration and Line Drawing: The Evolution of Figural Depiction in Chinese Literature and Painting from Complexity to Simplicity

摘要: 中国艺术传统中,文学与绘画虽表现形式各异,却在人物塑造上遵循着“诗画同源”的内在联系,早期《诗经》《汉赋》及《洛神赋》等文学作品通过铺陈排比的赋体手法对人物外貌进行工笔重彩式的细腻描绘,与此相应,绘画史上战国《人物龙凤帛画》至唐代《捣练图》等作品也以浓丽色彩和精致线条追求“传神写照”。文学与绘画二者相互影响,都经历了从繁复到简洁,从外在到内在的转变,共同践行着简约的美学理念。
Abstract: In the Chinese artistic tradition, literature and painting, despite their different forms of expression, follow the inner connection of "shared origins of poetry and painting" in character shaping. Early literary works such as the Book of Songs, Han Fu (rhapsodies), and The Ode to the Luo River Goddess employed elaborate descriptive techniques to depict characters' appearances in a detailed, "fine brushwork" manner. Correspondingly, in the history of painting, works from the Warring States period's Figure Painting with Dragon and Phoenix to the Tang Dynasty's Court Ladies Preparing Newly Woven Silk also pursued "vivid portrayal" through rich colors and delicate lines. Literature and painting influenced each other, both undergoing a transformation from complexity to simplicity and from external representation to inner expression, jointly practicing the aesthetic principle of simplicity.
