Abstract: Kinship address terms represent one of the most culturally loaded lexical categories in any language system. Both Chinese and Hindi possess highly refined kinship address systems that strictly distinguish between paternal and maternal relatives; however, the two systems differ significantly in their classificatory logic, social functions, and cultural connotations. This paper takes paternal and maternal kinship address terms as its core research object, and employs Brown and Levinson's politeness theory together with sociolinguistic theory to conduct a systematic comparative analysis of the two kinship address systems. The study finds that the two languages share structural similarities in their paternal-maternal distinctions, but differ fundamentally in the social extension of address terms and their cultural functions. These differences are rooted in the distinct family structures and social organisational patterns of Chinese and Indian cultures, and carry significant pragmatic implications for cross-cultural communication.
