Abstract: The core value of documentaries is rooted in their unique connection with reality, and Charles Sanders Peirce's "indexical" theory provides a crucial framework for explaining this connection. This article focuses on the connotation, controversies, and creative implications of the indexical theory of documentaries, particularly incorporating the dimension of sound into the scope of indexical research, and systematically exploring the ontological characteristics of sound as an indexical symbol and its mutual verification mechanism with images. The research findings show that the indexicality of sound is manifested not only in physical traces such as synchronous sound and historical recordings and their causal relationship with reality (such as the mechanical replication of on-site environmental sounds), but also through metadata annotation and sound-image intertextuality to construct a cognitive contract (such as the authenticity verification between dubbing and literature). In the current era where digital technology reshapes the boundaries of documentary, the indexicality of sound faces challenges from new media such as AI-generated sound effects and virtual sound fields. The tension between sound indexicality and authenticity essentially represents a game between technological replicability and humanistic expressiveness. Expanding the explanatory dimension of the indexical theory of documentaries also provides creative paths that balance technical rationality and humanistic concern for new forms such as historical archive documentaries and animated documentaries.
