Abstract: This paper analyzes the modern portrayal of Hakuzōsu in Kyōgoku Natsuhiko's Koshō Hyakumonogatari and examines the four stages of the protagonist's interaction with Hakuzōsu, in order to explore the underlying relationship between humans and tradition. The four stages are: first, the initial fear upon encountering Hakuzōsu, which reflects the individual's instinctive rejection of tradition; second, the passive acceptance of the legend of Hakuzōsu, which reveals the individual's helplessness in the face of tradition's incessant repetition; third, falling into the illusion created by Hakuzōsu, which embodies the individual's psychological attempt to escape tradition; and finally, becoming Hakuzōsu oneself, which signifies a process of both deconstructing and reconstructing traditional culture. Through this narrative trajectory, Kyōgoku Natsuhiko does not simply retell yōkai folklore; rather, by means of the genesis of the Hakuzōsu figure, he reveals that yōkai are in fact cultural tools created by humans to explain their own fears and the unknown, thereby prompting a reflection on the complex tension between people and tradition—a tension of simultaneous dependence and resistance.
