Abstract: Against the backdrop of globalisation, the cross-cultural dissemination of Chinese animated films has become a key means of telling Chinese stories and conveying cultural values. This paper takes the phenomenon-level animated film Ne Zha:Demon Child Conquers the Sea(Ne Zha 2) as its subject of study, adopting a cross-cultural perspective to explore its innovative characteristics, practical challenges and avenues for improvement during the dissemination process. Through ‘in-depth analysis of narrative innovation’ and ‘diverse dissemination channels’, it has established a modern model for the dissemination of traditional intellectual property (IP) and successfully facilitated the global adaptation of Eastern mythology. However, it still encounters profound challenges, such as misinterpretations of character portrayals arising from differences in cultural contexts, a disconnect in values caused by the mismatch between traditional moral values and contemporary storytelling methods, and a fragmentation of meaning resulting from the detached presentation of visual symbols. In response, this paper offers recommendations including a tiered dissemination system, the reconstruction of narrative logic, and technology-enabled aesthetics, aiming to transition from ‘symbolic representation’ to ‘shared resonance of values’ in cross-cultural communication.
