Abstract: Folk language is the soul of local literature, carrying national cultural genes and regional characteristics. The quality of its translation bears on the effectiveness of Chinese literature “going global.” Rich in Chinese local vernacular expressions, Frog has achieved remarkable success in its overseas dissemination, owing largely to the translator’s creative efforts. This study, framed within Zhou Lingshun’s Translator Behavior Criticism theory, takes Howard Goldblatt’s English translation as the research object and examines the behavioral characteristics and patterns in rendering folk language into English. The findings show that Goldblatt adheres to "truth-seeking" as the foundation and "utility-attaining" as the priority, demonstrating dynamic fluctuations along the “truth-seeking-utility-attaining continuum.” Although his choices are constrained by multiple factors, including source text features, reader expectations, and the translators’ own dispositions, his core orientation remains constant: while faithfully reproducing the cultural connotations of folk language, he takes reader reception as the ultimate criterion, achieving a dialectical unity of "truth-seeking" and “utility-attaining.” This study reveals the translator’s subjective, provides a reference for the practice and criticism of folk language translation, and also expands outward-translation approaches for telling Chinese stories well.
